When a man intends on practicing polygamy, his first wife may feel neglected and become mentally disturbed. In a real world, it is very difficult for a man to treat both/multiple wives fairly and feeling of jealousy and neglect may arise. This may provoke her first wife to seek a divorce. Statistics from credible sources have revealed that an increasing number of women who are educated and economically independent are choosing to divorce their husbands rather than continue in a polygamous marriage.

In countries where polygamy is the root cause of divorce, lawmakers may ban polygamy as it has been found to be an unstable institution in today’s world. However, in societies where polygamy is acceptable, the second marriage should proceed only if the first wife gives her consent.
